According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year and affecting countries at all levels of modernization. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and instead of focusing on the negative impacts this disease has on our World, I want to focus on the improvements that have been made. - Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990.
- This is most likely attributable to improvement in screening, detection, awareness, and treatment options.
- Over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today.
- I am honored to be one of them!
- Due to the work breast cancer advocates, we have begun to reenergize the sciences. This surge has led to a focus on the genetic and molecular makeup of breast cancer and will continue to reveal how the disease works and how the body can be mobilized to fight it.
